Puppies Abused, Dumped On Side Of Road

Two puppies left along the side of the road are in a vet’s care tonight. The 8-week-old male pup named Bert and female pup named Dharma were found along New Leicester Highway Thursday morning. Both are now being treated for severe neglect at the Mills River Animal Clinic in Henderson County.
They’re very lucky they’re not more sick than they are, said Dr. Rachelle McKinnon with Mills River Animal Clinic.
It breaks my heart, they didn’t ask for this, said Heidi Wagner who runs BoxerButtsandOtherMutts rescue. She got a call from a supporter Thursday who saw the dogs left for dead at 11 a.m.
I’ll never understand how anyone could do this, said Wagner. Bert, the male dog is in more serious condition. While both are getting antibiotics, the male puppy may not be strong enough to make it through the night.
If the person who left the dogs is found, they could face animal cruelty charges. But those with the rescue say it is hard to take criminal action because in North Carolina, dogs are considered property of the owners to do what they wish with. Friends of the rescue have already donated around $400 to help the puppies with medical care.By Kimberly KingFollow Kim on Twitter @KimKingReports
