A well-meaning family in Whitehorse, Canada recently got quite a shock after learning a dog they saved isn’t exactly what they thought. Ralph Shopland and his relatives discovered the tiny, abandoned creature in poor health near a lake on the weekend of Easter.

The family took, what they thought was a puppy, in and turned to social media to find a wet nurse. For a few days, the animal nursed off a surrogate, and it was during this time, the Shoplands learned the male animal isn’t a puppy at all.

A Yukon conservation officer said at first the family wasn’t quite sure what it is. They reportedly speculated that it might be an otter or a wolverine.

However staffers from the Yukon Wildlife Preserve have since taken the creature in and they now suspect he’s a fox, due to the telltale white tip on his tail.

They’ll have to wait to find out for sure, but even more important than knowing his species is the fact that the little guy is doing great. He is reportedly active, hydrated and eating well.

Conservation authorities believe his mother was hit by a car. Given that he’s already becoming accustomed to humans, he will most likely live in captivity for the remainder of his life.
