Teaching Puppies to Be Calm

Puppies receive a lot of attention for doing things they shouldn’t be doing, like, stealing socks, chewing on cords and pulling at the thread of your rug.

Set aside 5 minutes, twice a day, to reinforce your puppy for calm behavior. In this video I kneel down at the edge of Mia’s training mat, holding food and a clicker. The clicker is used to “mark” behavior that I like and predicts reinforcement. When Mia jumps up, I withhold reinforcement, when Mia puts all four paws on the mat I mark and reinforce that behavior.

By the second day you can see that she is no longer jumping, but she does start to offer sits and downs.
