FAQ PLEASE READ!
Q: What is the puppy’s name and sex?
River, female.

Q: What breed is the puppy?
A: Japanese Akita.

Q: Are these dogs rescues?
A: No. They are purebred Japanese Akita puppies. Both parents come from Japan, and this breeding is part of our preservation efforts for this endangered breed.

Q: Why does she sleep so much?
A: She’s still a baby and they need to sleep a lot. Even when she gets older, like most dogs she will nap frequently.

Q: When did the stream start?
A: January 9th, a few hours after the puppy was born.

Q: How long will this stream go on?
A: Until the puppy is 12 weeks old, around April 1st.

Q: Is the puppy for adoption?
A: No, she has a home already waiting for her.

Q: What is the point of this live stream?
A: So the future owners can watch their puppy grow up, and so that we can monitor puppy and momma when we’re not in the same room.

Q: Where is this?
A: In a private residence in Southern California. We have en entire bedroom setup that encompasses the whelping box, potty grass, playpen, and momma’s area to relax and take a break. When the puppy is older, she will go to an outdoor play yard during the day (also on camera).

Q: Where is the mom?
A: She is almost always lying on the floor just outside the pen keeping an eye on her pup. Sometimes she may be outside to go to the bathroom herself, or eating dinner or having some “me time” with her humans.

Q: Why isn’t momma in with the puppy?
A: She comes and goes as she pleases, and is a good and attentive mother. She will be in with the pup at meal times or whenever else she needs her. As River becomes more independent, she will come in to nurse less but play more.

Q: Who is that human in with the puppies?
A: The lady with red and blue hair is “Mrs. Kaiju” and the balding man is her husband “Mr. Kaiju.” The older lady with graying hair is Mrs. Kaiju’s mom, Grandma Kaiju. Anyone else is a friend of the family or future puppy owner.

Q: Where is the father?
A: He belongs to a family in Texas and is not in residence.

Q: Can we see other dogs in the whelping room?
A: No. Other adult dogs are not allowed in the whelping room because they don’t help with raising puppies and could stress momma. Other dogs might be introduced on camera outside in the play yard.

Q: What’s that weird sound? Cats, alarms, geese?!
A: We have a playlist that includes nature sounds, music, lullabies, sports broadcast, and many sound effects for conditioning and habituation. Early exposure to real life sounds will help puppies as they grow and experience the world.

MORE INFO
The mother’s name is Mosura. The father’s name is Tora. We own the mother. There was one puppy born by c-section, a little girl named River. Her color is called brindle or akatora (red tiger). She was born around 10:30 am on January 9th. Although she appears almost black now, River will have coloration like this when she grows up: http://kaijukennels.com/dog/bruno/

The parents are purebred Japanese Akitas from Japan. They are not American Akitas or mixed with American Akita. They have health clearances for hips and eyes through OFA. We show our dogs in AKIHO, NIPPO, and UKC. We also do nose work, lure coursing, and barn hunt. We are members of AKIHO and the Japanese Akita Club of America (JACA) and work tirelessly to preserve and protect the breed. We occasionally foster dogs for rescue and often give financial assistance to Akita rescues through JACA Cares or directly.

River is NOT AVAILABLE. We have a long waiting list and lots of great homes to choose from before we even begin planning a litter. Our screening process is very selective. All pups come with health warranties, microchip, spay/neuter if sold as a pet, and our promise to be on call 24/7 for anything the owner may need. We support our extended Kaiju family for the lifetime of the dog. We will also accept back any pup we bred at any time for any reason.
