What is a puppy mill?

The goal of puppy mills is to make a profit by mass producing puppies for the pet trade. Puppies for sale in pet stores and online often come from puppy mills.

Right now, hundreds of thousands of adult dogs are suffering on the “production line” in America’s puppy mills. They live in tiny wire-bottom cages, in squalid conditions, with little human contact and veterinary care, often for years. Their sole purpose is to produce puppies. It is no life for man’s best friend.

Meanwhile, more than 9,000 animals are killed in America’s shelters every day.

The goal of Best Friends’ puppy mill initiatives is to bring about a time of No More Homeless Pets by working against puppy mills and irresponsible breeding. Our team saves lives by educating consumers about the inhumane conditions in puppy mills, encouraging people to adopt rather than buy pets, and advocating for better laws to combat puppy mills.
