You may have always liked the idea of sharing your home with a graceful greyhound. In addition to the classic greyhound, you can find their miniature cousins, the Whippet and the Italian Greyhound. Greyhounds can be found from Scotland to Persia, from Arabia to Russia. This noble breed has certainly influenced the world. Greyhounds date back to ancient Egypt, so it’s no surprise that their influence can be seen in many other breeds.

This ancient breed was bred in the Nile Valley around 2900-2751 BC. Created to find and chase wild animals such as hares and rabbits, the Greyhound is the fastest breed of dog, reaching speeds of up to 45 miles per hour.
๐๐๐ Italian Greyhound.
If you want a miniature greyhound, the Italian Greyhound is the way to go! This breed is believed to have originated in the Roman Empire.
๐๐๐Spanish Greyhound or Galgo Espanyol
The Spanish greyhound is often referred to as the Spanish Greyhound or Spanish Galgo. The greyhound was recorded in Spanish history as early as 100 AD, and the breed is believed to be descended from greyhounds found in Egypt at the time.
๐๐๐ Persian greyhound or saluki
The elegant and independent Persian Greyhound is the Saluki. The Persian Greyhound dates back to 7,000 B.C. Favorites of the Egyptian pharaohs, Alexander the Great and the Ming Dynasty. Salukis may look fragile, but they are built to withstand harsh conditions.
๐๐๐ Arabian Greyhound or Slofi
The now rare Arabian Greyhound is another ancient species of greyhound, also known as the slofy. It is pronounced “sloe-gee.” These dogs were originally bred by Bedouins and Berbers in North Africa.
๐๐๐ Russian Borzoi or Borzoi
The Russian Borzoi or Russian Wolfhound is more commonly known as a borzoi. Their name comes from the word “borzoi,” which in Russian means fast or impetuous, which these dogs certainly are! They have been around since the 16th century.
๐๐๐ Afghan greyhound or Afghan hound
Afghans are the oldest purebred dog in the world; others claim they were dogs on Noah’s Ark. The breed is believed to predate written history and has been a popular element of Eastern culture ever since.
๐๐๐ Whippet
The graceful Whippet was bred as a smaller version of the greyhound, cheaper to feed and easier to keep. Revered by miners in the north of England, they were nicknamed the “poor man’s racehorse” because of the popularity of racing between these lightning-fast dogs.
