–►When creating the breed, they used the smooth-haired fox terriers taken as a basis, exported in the 17th century from the Netherlands to Nagasaki, miniature Manchester Terriers and Italian greyhounds, crossed with small aboriginal dogs, about which little is known now. However, there are other versions of the origin of the breed. At one time, this dog was known as the Mikado Terrier, Japanese Fox Terrier, Cobe Terrier and Shorthaired Terrier.

Planned breeding started around 1900 made it possible to improve the breed by 1930, and the breed club, founded in 1932, developed its standard at the same time. The first publication about the breed, describing its origin, dates back to 1938.

On April 1, 1964, the Japanese Terrier was officially recognized by the International Cynological Federation and assigned to the Terrier Group and Small Terrier Section. The breed is also recognized by the National Kennel Club. Japanese terriers survived mainly as lap dogs in Kobe, Yokohama and other port cities.
