City Dogs Rescue & City Kitties is joining the effort to relieve the stress on shelters in Texas from Hurricane Harvey. The unprecedented flooding in the Houston region left many dogs displaced and no homes to return to. Local shelters are attempting to reunite dogs with their families and emergency shelters are in place. However, there’s still not enough space or staff to accommodate the need. Shelters in Texas need to create space for these dogs and must move current residents out in order to make this happen. If they are unable to move the unclaimed dogs, they will be forced to euthanize to make room.
Shelter overcrowding is a problem on a daily basis due to owner surrenders and unclaimed strays. After a disaster the need is unimaginable. The numbers of displaced animals from Harvey, and now Irma, are overflowing to regional states so the impacts are far reaching.
We have a request to take in 10 dogs from Texas shelters. Some of these dogs were directly impacted by the flooding from Harvey and others are displaced because of the resulting overcrowding. In order to rescue these ten dogs we need to raise at least $2000 to cover the costs of their basic vetting, microchips, and spay/neuter surgeries as well as address any health issues that might emerge.
