Worried How Puppy Will Adjust To Condo Life

While most of us are painfully aware of this fact, one thing that often goes overlooked is that our pets can experience stress from moving as well. This is especially true if you happen to be downsizing from a house to a condo–whereas your puppy might have been used to frolicking around in wide open spaces, he/she might have a hard time adjusting to your new (smaller) digs. If you’ve been worrying about how your puppy is going to respond to their new environment, below are some handy tips to help your furry friend make a smoother transition.

1. Maintain your current routine as much as possible.
Just because your residence changed doesn’t mean that your puppy’s routine has to. Try to stick with your normal schedule for feeding, playtime, walking, bedtime, etc., so that your puppy will begin to get the message that things are still very much in order, even if their new place seems unfamiliar.

2. Be available, but also be willing to give them their space.
Some puppies will be a little more “clingy” during times of uncertainty; allow your furry pal the opportunity to snuggle and bond as much as needed to help ease the transition. Others would rather detach from all of the moving insanity and slink off to a quiet corner to sleep their anxiety away. Either way, it goes (or if it’s somewhere in between), just try to be understanding of their needs and be willing to provide a sense of security for them however it best suits their personality.

3. Be patient.
All of us, whether we have fur or not, need some time to adjust to new and unfamiliar surroundings. Be willing to give your puppy time to sniff around and get familiar with their new home, even if it means that they would rather hide out for a few days. Recognize that their behavioral habits might change for a little while, including when and how much they eat, sleep, potty, etc. Some puppies might even have a couple of “accidents” on the floor in a new place; be willing to make allowances while they’re still making sense of their new environment.

4. Try a game of “hide and go treat”.
One of the ways to ease any anxiety about your puppy’s new environment is to hide doggie treats in various areas of the condo that you want your puppy to use. This will transform their environment from suspicious and unfamiliar to a fun place of discovery.

5. Make good use of the outdoors.
Smaller living quarters could tempt your dog to become “stir crazy” more often, so make an extra effort to get outdoors with your pup as much as you can. This could include taking them for walks around the neighborhood or allowing them some time to run freely at a local dog park.

While there might be a few rough patches as you’re making the transition from a home to a condo, the good news is that most dogs will eventually adjust to their new environment with no problem.
