► Why did I choose a Standard Poodle? (SPoo)
They are great dog for people with allergies as they lose very little dander and DO NOT SHED! So no hair on couches, clothes, etc. Unlike most dogs, Poodles have hair, not fur. Their coat, however, requires a lot of upkeep and regular grooming. Poodles come in many different colors and 3 sizes, the Standard Poodle being the biggest with male adults weighing up to 30kg / 66 pounds.
Standard Poodles are the second smartest breed after Border Collies and are thus easy to train and very eager to learn and please their humans. Learning commands is much easier for a SPoo than for many other dogs. Spoos are often used as guide dogs and service dogs.
Originally bred as water retrievers and hunting dogs for water fowl (most people don’t know this), Spoos are highly athletic and agile dogs that love swimming, running, jumping and playing. As they have an instinctive prey drive, you may need to keep that in check from very early on. They often exceed at Agility training and love to show off their graceful skills. This is a great breed with high stamina to accompany you on long walks, hikes and runs.
They are super intelligent, social dogs that get on well with adults, childres and other dogs, making them a perfect family pet.
Many people associate Poodles with a froo-froo and silly image due to the extravagant hairstyles that are used in dog shows, but you don’t have to clip your dog that way. Shorn down, they look like regular dogs and have a wonderful calm, gentle, loving and playful personality.
Standard Poodles need a fair amount of exercise and mental stimulation to be happy and are very loyal and affectionate to their owners. These dogs also make good apartment pets as they are calm and docile indoors, but very active outside as long as you go on daily walks or play sessions. Poodles also love to learn and perform tricks, so if you want a dog that can show off to your friends, this might be the perfect breed for you!
► Why did I go through a Breeder and not adopt?
I’ve though about getting a dog long and hard and realized pretty fast into my research on suitable dogs that due to my skin allergies and strong aversion to pet hair, that Standard Poodles fit the best to my lifestyle. Almost all dogs shed a lot and I just can’t stand animal hair all over my home and on my clothes, so getting any kind of dog just wouldn’t suit me. I wanted a big dog that’s also athletic and easy to train, so Spoos were just the ideal fit. I looked at shelters for about half a year, also online, but I could not find a Standard Poodle to adopt. They are not a very common breed where I live, and I rarely see them in my area. It was only after a long time searching for a Standard Poodle to adopt that – unable to find one – I decided to go to a Breeder. I would definitely recommend that anyone who wants a dog at least weighs the option of adopting first. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work out for me. Thanks for respecting my life choices!
