SOT. Owner (in Spanish): “It’s [green] because of a product that dogs have called biliverdin that has mixed with the mother’s placenta, so the dog is dyed green and they are born that colour.”

Dog breeders in Valladolid were shocked by the green colouring of a newly-born pup on Wednesday, the cause of which is still being investigated. Two puppies from the litter born on June 3 had the discolouration, but one of the animals died shortly after birth.

Previous cases of green dogs have been reported, although the colour tends to fade quickly after birth. The condition may be as a result of exposure to the chemical biliverdin in placenta, a pigment found in bile.
