How To Care For Newborn Puppies – Caring For a Pekingese Puppy.

Before your Pekingese female dog goes into labor, you should prepare a nest for her. It is important that you get her accustomed to her designated place to help her stay there when she finally goes into labor.

A whelping box that is two times the size of your Pekingese would be good for the dog. However, you need to check and ensure that the walls are not so high to prevent the mother from hoping into it. You may have the box heated to provide the necessary warmth. The box should also have parts that are unheated so that the puppies can crawl to those areas whenever they feel that the warmth is too much. The heat must be mild and should only be meant to provide them with some warmth when the mother is away.

During the first three weeks, ensure that you weigh the pups on a daily basis and check if they are adding on weight or not. If there is no change in weight, it suggests that the pups are not getting enough food. The mother’s milk could be insufficient, and it may require that you breastfeed them. Use prepared goat or dogs milk to breastfeed them. You should never breastfeed the puppies on cow’s milk.

Newborn puppies should be fed every two hours.
It is ok to use a human bottle nipple if the pet’s nipple is not delivering enough milk. However, you should never try to use a tube to feed newborn puppies. Also, you should never use a dropper since new puppies cannot close their throat and so once the stomach is full, the milk will go to the lungs and drown the newborn puppy.

By the 4th week, you may introduce solid food since their stomach will have grown. You are free to mix cereal baby meat with milk in a bowl and let them feed on there. If the puppy cannot stand on its legs, assist it by holding it.

The Peke puppies will always wake up at night once, and they expect to have their food. Ensure that you have someone to feed them when they wake up.

After four weeks, the puppies are ready for exercises. Ensure that you give them some exercise. The activities should be given indoor.

By the 6th week, they should start getting immunization shots. It should continue until they are 12 weeks. They should receive their final shot when they are 16 weeks.
