Havanese and Coton de Tulear Playing with Six Week Old Puppies

Our area is infamous for people discarding pets they no longer want. That’s how we wound up adopting a kitten I caught in a raccoon trap (I let them go a few miles away in case you are wondering).

A few years ago a pregnant Jack Russell Terrier, Rat Terrier or similar dog was roaming around our property. We and some neighbors tried but no one could get close to her. I came home from work one day and could not find my wife. She was outside watching the dog give birth to her puppies in a burrow she had dug between our house and a thicket of trailing rosemary.

I took her and the puppies into the garage and put them in a crate while we decided what to do. The mother did not have a collar or a chip, but obviously had been well taken care of because she was house trained, leash trained and very obedient.

My wife set up a spare bedroom as a nursery and we raised the puppies until it was time for them to find new homes, which they did. We also decided to socialize the puppies with our Havanese Mookie and Coton de Tulear Lucy, both of whom are very gentle.

Mama (the name we gave the terrier) came to us about six months after our other Havanese died. To us it was like karma. She is a very good dog—not gentle, she is a terrier after all—but still a very good dog.
